Fresh Fingers: 2014's Raddest Nail-Art Trends

Foiled Metallics

Metallics never really go out of style — they just evolve and get more awesome. "This season’s new power metallic is emblazoned with foiling and glitter," says Arnold. "Heighten sophistication by contrasting a gold chrome nail with black edging, or doing a peachy nude nail with a slim silver perimeter, as seen on the runways at Norman Ambrose and The Blonds." To get the look, Arnold recommends picking up some gold leafing at your local craft store, applying it to wet polish with some tweezers, and sealing your million dollar mani with a top coat to protect it.
 Freehand Ombré

Gone are the days of airbrushed ombré — the new incarnation is messy and imperfect, like this punchy design created by Creme at Yigal Azrouel's Cut25. "This is a loose, messy, hand-painted version of a usually softly gradated nail look done by airbrushing," she says. "It's incredibly easy to do — the messier the better! It's almost woven, very fabric-like."
Futuristic Lucite

Your tips will get sci-fi this spring with lucite finishes and illuminated top coats. "Transcend the nude nail craze by rocking clear tips with texture," says Arnold. We love this deceptively simple look from Alexandre Herchcovitch: Attach clear tips to your nails, then layer on an opalescent glitter polish to give your digits an out-of-this-world glow.
Duo Tones

Two-tone manis are nothing new, but both Lippmann and Weiss-Fischmann say we're going to see new iterations in 2014. "Painting nails with different shades is a big trend," says Lippmann. "The idea is to mix and match, and never worry about what you’re wearing." Adds Weiss-Fischmann, "Two-toned manicures with different but complementary hues will also continue to be popular." We love this posh purple look from Prabal Gurung. Working with Sally Hansen, Jin Soon Choi painted nails with a shimmery lilac hue, then layered on a deep purple polish just above the nail bed, to create a chic silhouette effect.
 Punk-Rock Pretty

If you're looking for a more dramatic nail look, the punk-inspired patterns and bold colors of this trend are right up your alley. "Debbie Harry meets Rihanna in this rock-star nail trend of nearly-neon shades in daring, psychedelic designs," says Arnold. "Bold checkerboards, dangerous ombres, and electric halo nails are energized with flashes of bright pink and primary reds, greens, and midnight blues." To score this cool checkerboard effect seen at Nicole Miller, Arnold says to paint two coats of bright pink polish over the entire nail. Dip a detailing brush in navy blue polish and create a cross in the center of the nail, then fill in the opposing squares with blue polish. Finish with a shimmery top coat to add a bit of depth to the look.
Remember when black nail polish was just a one-day-a-year Halloween treat? Or perhaps, an every-day-of-the-year staple during your goth phase? (No judgment.) Luckily, anything goes these days, and black has become almost as classic as cherry red or pale pink, albeit an edgier classic. If you’ve been longing to give it a try, fall is the perfect time — it’ll fit right in with the season’s hues.

Don’t think black tips are really “you?” Let us convince you otherwise: We’ve rounded up 10 options for 10 types of people — and we think at least one them is the noir pick for you. Click to see the darkest color in a new light.  Via
If you love leather...
Why not match your manicure to your black leather jacket? Named after Alexa Chung, this polish dries to a leather-like, matte texture, which — as long as you don’t think about it as wearing skin on your nails (shudder) — looks pretty damn cool.
Nails Inc. Alexa Leather Polish, $15, available at Nails Inc..

There Really Is A Black Nail Polish For Everyone

If you’re environmentally conscious...
This opaque option is cruelty-free, vegan, and made without toluene, dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, or camphor — five potentially toxic ingredients used in other polishes.
Priti NYC Nail Polish in Nigra, $15, available at Priti NYC.

If you’re a total klutz...
The best way to fake a gel manicure, this life-proof polish lets you wear deep, shiny, chip-free black for as long as you want — not for as long as you manage to go without messing up your nails (which in our case is about 20 minutes).
CND Vinylux Weekly Polish in Black Pool, $9.94, available at Walgreens.

If you believe in fairies...
Unlike most glittery polishes, this “pixie dust” formula features matte sparkles. The effect is more sugary than shiny — and totally magical, of course.
Zoya Dahlia PixieDust, $10, available at Zoya.

If you love the smell of coffee in the morning...
It may look like a typical black polish, but every time you put your hand near your nose, you'll get a whiff of coffee beans.
Revlon Parfumerie Scented Nail Enamel in Espresso, $6.49 $3.89, available at Ulta.
